For those of you who dare to get off the road and get a little dirty, Xterra Triathlon racing is great. Can be slightly different, so this is a great group to learn what others are doing.

About me
Name: Ryan Ignatz
Date of Birth: 9/25/78
Hometown: I was originally born in Arcadia, CA but grew up in Estes Park, CO. I know reside in Boulder, CO
Occupation: I manage a premier triathlon store called Colorado Multisport in Boulder, CO. I am one of the main bike fitters and face of the store.
Last School Attended: Masters of Science in Kinesiology and Applied Physiology at Univ of Colorado at Boulder
College Sport: I was a part of the 9 time Collegiate National Championship triathlon team.
Role model/Inspiration/Favorite athlete: All my friends who love to go out and work hard while enjoying every second of it.
Current Sponsors: First Endurance Nutrition, BMC Bicycles, Colorado Multisport, Tri-Massage.com
Hobbies and favorite things outside of XTERRA: I like hanging out with my friends and doing nothing. I enjoy sitting at coffee shops and people watching or meeting new people.
# Years Racing Triathlon: 12 years. Started on road and moved to off road. Racing professionally since 2000.
# Years Racing XTERRA: I’ve been competing in XTERRA races since 2003, but more full time since 2004.
Strength: Run and bike
Weakness: Swim
2009 Racing Goal: I’d like to be one of the top 3 Americans in Xterra and place top 5 at every race. I’d also like to get back on the road tri scene and become competitive in the 70.3 distance.
Race Strength: Definetly not the swim. My biking skills are fairly strong and my running can be on if I am not injured and am running at least a few miles a week. However, my biggest strength is in the transitions (too bad that doesn't add up to 15 minutes). I really like the XTERRA format since the bike and run are the dominant portions of the events.
Pre race rituals: Drink some beers the night before and relive some good stories. Otherwise, it’s always different. I just show up and hope to finish.
Top 3-8 racing accomplishments: 2002 USAT All American, 6th at Collegiate Nationals (2002). 14th at 2002 Pro National Champs. 11th/6th/6th at XTERRA National Champs (2003/2006/2007). 2002/2004 South West Regional Collegiate Champion (Runner up in 2003), 14th/20th/9th/16th/14th at XTERRA World Champs (2004/2005/2006/2007/2008)

Xterra World Championship Nutrition Report

The Xterra World Champs are held in Maui, HI every year. The conditions are slow and hard, hot and sunny. Therefore, nutrition is really important. For this years race, I knew that I would be racing for about 2:45hr and wanted to make sure with my limited fitness and heat training to make sure I had adequate calories, electrolytes and hydration. Here is how my nutrition strategy went:

Descent gluten free pre-race meal of about 700 calories (banana, cereal, 1st End Bar, egg, water, coffee). I al… Continue
