Yesterday was the XTERRA Southeast Cup race in Pelham, Alabama. The weather was mild with overcast skies and low 70s. Normally this is a race with high heat and humidity but we lucked out this year. I made sure to stay hydrated and fueling in my lon…

Dant, Still put more effort into the climbs since this is a majority of the race, but don't just cruise the downs (I had a big lead at the turn around and lost a little during the second half). There is one very steep, but short hill towards the end…

Dant, Congrats on your season so far. From your race reports, it looks like you have the power on the bike to excel at this race. You also have the benefit of racing with a watt meter which could be a huge advantage on this course. Make sure not to…

About me
I was born and raised in Northern Michigan where he started running competitively at age 11. In college I competed for Central Michigan University where I met my wife, Ingrid--also on the cross country and track teams. In the spring of 2000 I finished school, got married and moved to Colorado

The mountains and the thin air were the perfect stimulus for me. I bought a mountain bike from the pawn shop and decided I would jump into a 100 mile mountain bike race the next month that included over 13,000 feet of elevation gain. That was my introduction to high altitude racing.

I tried an Xterra my first summer and I couldn't believe how far behind the leaders I was. I knew I could improve a lot, but I had no idea how much. I have seen steady improvement since that first race, moving through the amateur ranks and now as a professional. Success came quickly in winter high altitude events like snowshoe racing and winter multisport. Triathlon has been a great challenge for me and I have high aspirations for the 2009 season.

On race morning I had some instant oatmeal mixed with vanilla yogurt about 2 1/2 hours before race start. I mixed up another 1… Continue
