Back2Back... 30th Columbia Triathlon

Classy Podium crewThe Columbia Triathlon is one of my favorite races of the year. We have only met twice now, but it was love at first sight. With the tough hilly, technical bike, and a strength run that screams slow times, we were a match made it heaven. After taking the course record this last year in my first go I was hoping for another strong performance for the 30th addition of the race. As a side note, it is…See More

Perfect day for a race

Winner Winner Fried Chicken DinnerWell it took four tried but finally I held on to win the Rev3 Knoxville Triathlon. The first time I did it I was coming off a big win and St Anthony's and people were talking about me being the favorite to come to Knoxville for the inaugural race. I led off the bike but ended up fourth on the day. Then two years ago I had a decent lead off the bike, but was run down by Matty in…See More

Very solid 7th at St A's

Normally I would not be pleased with much of anything about a 7th place finish. The old line if you ain't first your last, isn't really the truth, but generally good races land you on the podium. This however wasn't the case in the super stacked field that assembled in St Pete for this past weekends 30th running of the St Anthony's Triathlon. St A's is a special race to me because it was my first big win as a pro 3 years ago. It is considered a "spring classic" in the sport, on par with Paris-…See More

False Start

This past Sunday was the first race in the 2013 Lifetime Fitness Series down in Miami, at the Nautica South Beach Triathlon. It is a race that I have won in the past and a yearly start to my domestic race season. This year I was excited to get down there and race after a bit of a lay off post Auckland, and some really good weeks of training. However, in racing as in life, wise words I know, there are some things that are simply out of your control. No matter how hard I trained, dialed in my…See More

Auckland 70.3 nutrition plan

This past weekend was the Auckland 70.3. I went into it with a solid plan and some decent fitness and came out with a decent result and a lot of lessons learned. Below is how I approached the race nutritionally, based on training experience and what I use in olympic distance races as a guide. Night before- I normally go with Hawaiian pizza, but not knowing how my stomach would feel the next morning with a lot of cheese I decided to go with an old stand by in chicken, pasta, and salad. In mass…See More

Toyota Cup Champion

Toyota Cup ChampionI have spent the last 3 years chasing that statement.Racing almost every Toyota Cup race in an effort to both succeed at that race, but more importantly stack up enough points to be able to crown myself the Cup Champion at the end of the year. In 2011 I was second by 1 pt, and if something has ever left a bitter taste in my mouth that was it. After all the mishaps at the different races to come up…See More

Twice as nice

This past weekend was a race I had been looking forward to most of the year, but most definintely since my bad race at HyVee a month ago. It was gonna be my time to prove to the world and myself that all the hard work I had put in wasn't a waste.I really like the LA course, and have had good success there in the past including last years win. I also really like that it is a morning race, which if you have been following along I like much more than afternoon races. Lots less time to screw things…See More

Missed Opportunity

In sports and in life there are few things that leave you feeling quite as empty and disappointed as a missed opportunity. When you have worked your tail off, gotten prepared, done everything you could have to be successful and then just missed it. That is pretty much the story of HyVee Triathlon 2012 for me.Heading into the race I had put together the best 4 week training block of my career and had never been more confident about a race. Even after my crash in Chicago last week I was still…See More

Left a little skin in Chicago...

Luckily  that is all I left there. You know that moment in a bike crash where you are doing one thing, in this case turning, and the next thing you know you are flat on the ground wondering how you got there? Yep, had one of those, only this time as I realized I had crashed my first thought was did I just injure myself the week before my biggest race of the year. As I said luckily it turned out to be just some skin on the road, a sore hip, and a bruised ego.Up until this point of impact the race…See More

Redemption...Sort of

This past weekend was the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon, and the one year anniversary of my rib breaking bike collision that put a huge damper on the middle part of my 2011 campaign. I was excited to get back and try and get some redemption from the crash and come up with another big race to cap off a great first half of the season. The race in Minneapolis does a great job of taking care of the…See More

Home Town Throwdown

Winning races is awesome. Winning races in your hometown is even better. Winning a race referred to as "the pro town throw down" because of the local talent in your hometown, priceless. My unofficial triathlon career started at the age of 15 here in Boulder at the Boulder Peak Triathlon. I had a recently acquired bike that didn't fit, a borrowed wetsuit, and a whole lot of competitive fire.…See More

PHLY Triathlon

This past Sunday was the third time that I have competed in the Philadelphia Triathlon, and the second since the race became part of the Race for the Toyota Cup Series. This years edition began with me sitting in second place behind Ben Collins and 4 points back in the standings. I knew with the challenging bike course that this race would be a good opportunity to have a great race and hopefully get back some points in the Series. 4am came early and after a hot shower and my normal pre race…See More

It's not about the race

I am tired. As I write this I have done 4 races in the past five weeks and my body decided I had until the end of the race on Monday before it was gonna let this head cold take full effect. The good part is that my body held off on the cold until after my 4th place showing at CapTex on Monday, the bad part is that now that the cold has come on it is magnifying the…See More

Hard Course, Good Times

Columbia Maryland is a beautiful place. I now know first hand as I finally made my way there for the 2012, and 29th edition of the Columbia Triathlon. Anyone who has followed the sport of triathlon, or been around it long enough knows about Columbia. The biggest reason, because it is hard! I mean silly hard. Which as it turns out is exactly how I like my courses.I actually ended up at Columbia sort of by accident this year as I had been planning to go to Memphis in May and then on to DC later…See More

Bride's Maid again...

Rev3 Knoxville has quickly become one of my favorite races on the calendar. It always come shortly after St Anthony's and it is a great contrast in style. St Anthony's is a rough ocean swim followed by a super fast, flat bike and run. Knoxville, is a fast flat water river swim, followed by a super tough and hilly bike and run. Both have their own challenges and both races this year were super deep and fast.Going back to…See More
